AMC 401

Well, here is the heart and soul of my Jeep just before the rebuild started.
It's an AMC 401 that I pulled from a 1978 Jeep J series pickup.  This thing was in bad shape when I got it.
It was originally a mud truck that was driven into a mud hole and the chain on the QuadraTrac transfer case blew.

The guy walked out and sold the whole truck to someone on the sidelines for a few hundred bucks.  The guy selling
it thought it was a 360!  Anywho, the guy that bought the truck parted it out and I was the lucky one who
bought the engine.  Woo Hoo!  401 cubic inches of pure muscle baby!

I cleaned it up (oh man was it dirty!), painted it Standard 209 Red, bolted on a few performance parts
and cranked that baby up.  It ran fine for about 20 minutes, then started knocking.  :(  Oh well, time for a complete
rebuild!  Anywho, here is the parts list for this engine:

Edelbrock 650 cfm carburetor with an off road needles and seat kit, Edelbrock Non-EGR Performer
Intake manifold, and K&N air filters for the carburetor and crank case vent.  Don't worry, a bigger air filter
is going on the carb.  I have a 14" Edelbrock chrome jobbie that I wanted to use, but apparently Edelbrock
decided that if you want to use their air cleaner on their carb, you have to buy a spacer!  Now to just find one!

Well, one thing I noticed right off the bat was the nail that was lodged in piston #8.
Where in the world did that come from?  Ahh, who knows.  Apparently someone
dropped some bolts in the chambers at some point also.  I am not going to tell you guys
what else was wrong with this engine!  All I can say is that I am amazed that it even ran!

OK, now here's a better shot of the nail in the piston.  Sheesh!

Well, she's coming apart pretty nicely.  Here is a picture I took after I finished taking the heads off.
Man I can't wait to get this thing running!

OK, here's a list of parts that I have accumulated so far for my engine:
Edelbrock #2132 Performer Plus Camshaft and Lifters
Edelbrock #1406 600 cfm Carb (Although I need to step up to at least a 750 cfm)
Edelbrock #???? Double Roller Timing Chain
Edelbrock #5832 Valve Springs
Edelbrock # 9720 Valve Spring Retainers
Edelbrock # Performer Intake Manifold, Non-EGR
Clevite Cam Camshaft Bearings
New timing chain cover and gears, inspected and modified for improved oil pressure by "jeepsr4ever" of BullTear
Aluminum crankshaft turning nut from BullTear
Engine oil priming tool for AMC V8's from BullTear
Oil bypass kit for improved oiling to the rear oil gallies from American Performance Products
New fuel pump
New hoses and belts
Fel-Pro full rebuild gasket set from American Performance Products
Alternator-115 Amp custom unit from Northwestern (sure beats the stock 30 amp unit!)

And last but not least, here are some links to some pages that I found VERY helpful for rebuilding my engine:
Bulltear    This site is great for tech questions and parts for anything else you need for AMC V8's!
American Performance Products  Great site for hard to find parts.  They are a little pricey, but they have what you need.
Mad Dawg Racing   This is a great company that is really dedicated to the AMC fanatic.
